The Legend of the Mermaid's Lantern

Tall ships would pass by lagoons in the night
only to see a glow in their site.
It's where a lonely mermaid patiently waits
the return of her captain from a far off place.
She fashioned a lantern from unwanted shells,
to break the wind from the light like a sail.
To guide her captain to her once more,
only to send him to sea off the shore.
If you see a glow in the night near the sand,
it's the lantern she fashioned in the palm of her hand.
